Sightseeing tour 4 days
This tour is the ideal combination of recreation, adventure and sightseeing. A beautiful and relaxed tour with overnight stays in wonderful hotels that gives a good and complete impression of the beautiful northern region of Thailand. You will visit the famous Golden Triangle, once the infamous opium production area of Thailand but now a much visited tourist destination. You will meet hilltribes and see how they live. You will be among elephans and see how they are trained to work in the jungle. You will visit the opium museum, make a ride on the back of an elephant and you will float down the river on a bamboo raft. At the border with Myanmar, the former Burma, the village Mae Sai has many markets with countless goods for sale. Of course also the famous “white temple” of Chiang Rai is included in this program. Start & end in Chiang Mai. This tour can be adapted to your personal wishes, for instance a 3 day version or with a light trekking and overnight stay in a hilltribe village. Day 1. Elephants & bamboo rafting
Today begins with a visit to an elephant training camp in the wonderful area of Mae Taman, north of Chiang Mai. Here you will see how these giant creatures are trained to work in the jungle, a training that requires many years. During a special performance the elephants will show their skills. You will make a ride on the back of an elephant of approximately 1 hour. Enjoy the jungle views from the elephant’s back. After this tour you will go to a camp on the river where bamboo rafts are prepared. You make a bamboo rafting tour, gently floating down the river. Onward to the Chiang Dao caves, with a burmese Buddha statue of white marble. After lunch onward to Thaton. Arrive at your hotel in the afternoon. The rest of the day and evening are free to enjoy the beautiful surrounding area. You will stay in the Maekok River Village Resort.
Day 2. Longnecks and mountain temples
You will have a special encounter with a number of hilltribes, among which the Padong longnecks. This tribe is famous because of the copper rings that the women wear around their necks. They start already at an early age, around 5 – 8 years old. The more rings they have, the better standing they are. The village is home to a number of other tribes as well. You travel onward through the wonderful mountainous area and visit the beautiful temple Wat Santa Khiri, located on the top of a hill. Take your time, you need to climb a bit and take a long staircase up to reach the temple. You stay overnight in a small and cozy hotel in the mountains of north Thailand.
Day 3. Golden Triangle
Visit the beautiful botanic gardens of Mae Fah Luang, formerly owned by the Princess Mother who passed away in 1995 and part of the royal Doi Tung palace. Onward to Mae Sai, the northern most point of Thailand and connected by a bridge with Myanmar. There is a large market where all kinds of articles are sold that are imported from China. Especially gemstones, but beware of fakes if you want to do some shopping yourself. In Tachilek, on the burmese side of the border, you can buy the goods at even lower prices. Lunch in a local restaurant. Move on to the Akha and Yao hilltribes. The Akha live at the foot of mount Toeng (2200m above sea). Onward to the Golden Triangle, where the 3 countries Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Visit the Opium museum. At the end of the afternoon arrive at your hotel, the beautifully located Imperial Golden Triangle Resort.
Day 4. White temple & Mekong river
In the morning you will make a boatride over the Mekong river. Travel onward through the magnificent mountains and visit the Baan Dam “black house” on route. In Chiang Rai you make a short stop at the Koning Mengrai statue, the founder of Chiang Rai. Of course you will also visit the splendid and famous white temple Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai. Then your journey back to Chiang Mai begins. On route you will stop at the Charin Garden Resort and the hot springs just outside the village Mae Kachan. Take a leisure stroll over the local market. Return in Chiang Mai around 17:00hr. Here this tour ends.
