Thailand's third largest island and one of the country's most popular beach destinations. Koh Samui has been a backpackers haven for many years but in the 80's the island developed to tourist proportions similar to Phuket and Pattaya, offering a lively though less vibrant nightlife. Main beaches are Chaweng and Lamai and there are some more private beaches such as Bophut, Mae Nam and Samrong Bay in the north. During the high season periods (Dec - Feb and Jul - Aug) it can be hard to find a place to stay. Koh Samui offers accommodation from budget to 5 star luxury resorts.
