About Koh Mak island
Lying between Koh Chang and Koh Kood, about 40 km from the mainland, is a group of 9 islands called the Koh Mak group.
Four of these islands are inhabited. Koh Mak, with an area of only 16 square km and 27 km coastline, is the third
largest island of Koh Chang national park. It has a lightly hilly terrain with plenty of coconut and rubber
plantations. There are a few 100 people living here, most of them related. There are about 10 resorts of similar
category. A limited but efficiently layed out infrastructure connects all the interesting places on the island. There
are several things to do, among those the ones described under day 2. Stargazing is a romantic experience here,
especially late at night when all the resort lights are turned off. The only lights will be from the stars and maybe
the moon as well.
No banks or money changing facilities are available on the island. GSM coverage is limited to a few hill peaks. The hotel owner has a high external GSM antenna pole which can be linked up to phones having an external antenna link. There are internet and email facilities at the nearby Koh Mak resort. Electricity on Koh Mak is supplied by the government for a limited period of time only. On Koh Mak electricity is available between 10:00 AM and 02:00 AM only. Most islands in the area (including Koh Chang) suffer from sand flies. Clients allergic to their bites should avoid lying or walking in the sand especially at dusk and use protective insect repellent. Mosquitoes can also be a problem, especially after rain and on days with no winds. Clients should be reasonably fit because getting on and off the ferries sometimes requires high steps from the shore directly on the boat, not via a bridge. Parents are solely responsible for the safety of their children. Traveling with traditional suitcases may not always be practical, we recommend to travel with a light backpack or travel bag.
